Tatsuro Kiuchi is a Japanese illustrator, born in 1966. He holds a degree in biology and has had a promising early career as a biologist. He has recently stepped away from his career as a scientist to become a student at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.
Back in Tokyo he works as an illustrator for children, developing a personal and sophisticated style, combining a 2.0 approach to the design, using almost exclusively rubber and brush in Photoshop and an endless library of textures, with a sensitivity to colors and Nippon typical art composition.
His work is complemented and enriched by references to editorial illustration and Japanese comic books from the ’60s, ranging from Tadanori Yokoo to Shotaro Ishinomori, in a mixture of elegance and expressive power, topped with a thin layer of irony.
His clients include: The Guardian, JAL, The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Royal Mail, Starbucks and The Washington Post.
